GATHERING

The Confession and Forgiveness

P: In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen

P: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse

the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily

magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

C: Amen

P: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

Silence for reflection and self-examination

P: Most merciful God,

C: we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in

thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you

with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus

Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk

in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen

P: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our

sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you

the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen

WORD

The First Lesson –

2 Kings 2:1-12 Pew Bible 319

Now when the LORD was about to take Eli’jah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Eli’jah and Eli’sha were on their

way from Gilgal. And Eli’jah said to Eli’sha, “Tarry here, I pray you; for the LORD has sent me as far as

Bethel.” But Eli’sha said, “As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they went

down to Bethel. And the sons of the prophets who were in Bethel came out to Eli’sha, and said to him, “Do you

know that today the LORD will take away your master from over you?” And he said, “Yes, I know it; hold your

peace.”

Eli’jah said to him, “Eli’sha, tarry here, I pray you; for the LORD has sent me to Jericho.” But he said, “As the

LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they came to Jericho. The sons of the prophets

who were at Jericho drew near to Eli’sha, and said to him, “Do you know that today the LORD will take away

your master from over you?” And he answered, “Yes, I know it; hold your peace.”

Then Eli’jah said to him, “Tarry here, I pray you; for the LORD has sent me to the Jordan.” But he said, “As the

LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them went on. Fifty men of the sons

of the prophets also went, and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan.

Then Eli’jah took his mantle, and rolled it up, and struck the water, and the water was parted to the one side and

to the other, till the two of them could go over on dry ground.

When they had crossed, Eli’jah said to Eli’sha, “Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you.” And

Eli’sha said, “I pray you, let me inherit a double share of your spirit.” And he said, “You have asked a hard

thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if you do not see me, it shall

not be so.” And as they still went on and talked, behold, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of

them. And Eli’jah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. And Eli’sha saw it and he cried, “My father, my father!

the chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” And he saw him no more.

Then he took hold of his own clothes and rent them in two pieces.

C/A: Thanks be to God!

The Second Lesson –

2 Corinthians 4:3-6 Pew Bible 1005

And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled only to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world

has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ,

who is the likeness of God. For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as

your servants for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our

hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

The Gospel –

Mark 9:2-9 Pew Bible 876

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark the ninth chapter.

C/A: Glory to you, O Lord!

And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart by

themselves; and he was transfigured before them, and his garments became glistening, intensely white, as no

fuller on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Eli’jah with Moses; and they were talking to

Jesus. And Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is well that we are here; let us make three booths, one for you and one

for Moses and one for Eli’jah.” For he did not know what to say, for they were exceedingly afraid. And a cloud

overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” And suddenly

looking around they no longer saw any one with them but Jesus only.

And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son

of man should have risen from the dead.

P: The Gospel of the Lord.

C/A: Praise to you, O Christ!

The Nicene Creed

A: Because this is a festival Sunday, this morning we confess our faith using the words of the Nicene Creed.

C/A: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and

unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God

from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father;

through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was

incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified

under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance

with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come

again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We

believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of

sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen

C: Hear our prayer.
